Uniquely flavorful and deeply aromatic, garlic is one of the most commonly used plants in cooking. And as anyone who’s ever used garlic knows, the best way to get the most flavor out of it, is to mince it, press it and mash it as much as possible. Of course, not everyone has the time to manually chop garlic into a hundred tiny bits, so for those of us who are aiming for speed and a truly intense flavor, garlic presses are a life saver.

If you use garlic for cooking a lot and you’d like to try a garlic press, we highly encourage you to do so. To help you pick the best one, we’ve put together a list of the eight best garlic presses on the market. Check them out and choose your favorite.

You’ve read the reviews and checked out the prices but still can’t figure out which garlic press is the best press? No worries – we’re here to help. All eight reviewed garlic presses are good, but there’s no doubt that some are better suited for you and your needs. To help you find the best garlic tool, we answer some of the most commonly asked questions whose answers should be able to help you pick the right one for you.

garlic press on the table

How to Use a Garlic Press?

Using a garlic press should be a piece of cake. After all, this handy little gadget is supposed to save you time and effort, and if it isn’t –it's a bad garlic press.

Most presses can crush whole garlic cloves, meaning you don’t have to peel them before you pop them in the press box and start squeezing. However, not peeling a garlic does lead to more residue, and therefore more things to clean after. Still, plenty of people don’t bother with peeling and they do just fine, but do know that in order to press unpeeled garlic cloves, the tool needs to be very strong and sturdy. In other words, if you plan on mincing unpeeled garlic, go for a high quality, preferably stainless steel garlic press.

Even if you hate peeling the garlic but you prefer to press it peeled (this does require less effort while squeezing), you can just use the peeler that usually comes with the press itself. Most of the peelers are made from silicone, and are super easy to use. All you have to do is put the garlic clove inside the peeler and roll your hand back and forth in order to peel it. Once peeled, you just chuck the clove(s) in the crusher and start squeezing.

Minced vs. Pressed: What is the Difference?

Now that we’ve covered the instructions, it’s time we answer the most commonly asked question: is there a difference between mincing and pressing the garlic, and if there is, which is better?

The answer to that question is – yes, there is a slight difference, and, it depends.

  • Mincing garlic

To mince garlic with a kitchen knife, one needs to make lengthwise cuts through the garlic and follow with the crosswise cuts in order to get finely chopped garlic pieces. Of course, the garlic should first be uncloved and peeled before the mincing can begin.

To properly mince a garlic, you need to cut it repeatedly, until you get a fine, almost paste-like consistency.

  • Pressing garlic

To press garlic with a kitchen press, one needs to just take a clove or two, place them in the crusher, grab the handles of the press and start pressing. What comes out of the press is finely chopped/minced/pressed garlic (it depends on the holes on the garlic press – if they’re very small, the garlic will be very finely chopped, almost grated, and if they’re bigger, the garlic will come out in little cubes).

With a garlic press, you don’t have to peel the garlic if you don’t want to – most presses chop it unpeeled with no problem.

As for the difference in taste, there is a slight difference between pressed and minced garlic. The pressed garlic has a more intense aroma as well as the flavor, while the minced garlic tastes and smells more mellow. For his reason, pressed garlic is best suited for all things cooked, while minced garlic may be better for dresses and dips. In the end though, they’re very, very similar and some people don’t notice the difference at all.

Benefits of Using a Garlic Press

If there isn’t much of a difference between minced/chopped garlic and pressed garlic, why use a press at all? There are several reasons why:

  • Saves Time

This is probably the number one reason people use garlic presses -  they save time. You can easily press 6-7 large cloves in under 2 minutes, whereas if you were to mince them... it would probably take you around 10-15 minutes (unless you’re a seasoned chef). Plus, with a press, you don’t even have to peel the garlic if you don’t want to. Most presses squeeze through unpeeled cloves with ease, which saves time even further.

  • No Garlic Smell

When chopping garlic with a kitchen knife, it’s pretty much impossible to avoid getting the garlic smell on your hands, knife and cutting board. Sure, you can roughly chop it and quickly get it over with, but anything that requires slightly more than that  – hello garlic smell.

With a garlic press, you seriously don’t have to worry about the smell. As you don’t even have to peel the cloves, let alone chop them, you can completely avoid the garlic aroma – at least on your hands. And even if you decide to peel it before you press it, most of these tools come with little silicon peelers that practically do the peeling for you.

Things to Look for in a Garlic Press

To pick a great garlic press, make sure it possesses at least some of the following things:

Efficient and sturdy: a good quality garlic press needs to be strong, durable and preferably able to squeeze through unpeeled garlic. For this reason, stainless steel presses may be the best option.

Comfortable to use: a garlic press should save you time and effort, so it’s crucial to be able to use it easily and comfortably. You should be able to squeeze one or several small cloves with minimal force.

Easy to clean: finally, a good garlic press should be easy to clean and wash. It’s a plus if a press comes with a cleaning brush/tool but it’s not necessary. What helps the most is being able to wash it in a dishwasher.
