Is it Okay to Bake Lasagna in an Aluminum Pan?
They have aluminum lasagna pan units because yes, it’s entirely okay to cook lasagna in aluminum. However, you might run into some disadvantages when compared to ceramic or glass.
Because aluminum heats up just like steel or iron, the metal gets hot and then transfers heat to the food. It acts as a heat conduit from the oven temperature to the food. This can result in some inconsistency with your finished product. It should also be noted that pasta sticks to aluminum, so greasing/spraying will be key here.
What Size Pan is Best for Lasagna?
The best lasagna pan for the very best lasagna will follow traditional dimensions. That’s 12” wide, 16” long, and 3.5” deep (the lasagna will usually be about 3” deep). That’s how you get the very best results at the end.
This 3:4 ratio gives the perfect way to distribute heat without burning your lasagna. If you have ever seen someone using an 8” x 8”, that’s okay as well, but try to avoid your traditional 9” x 13” pans if possible.
How Should I Clean my Lasagna Dish?
Well, that depends on your pan type. If you have a nonstick lasagna pan, it’s going to be different from glass. Let’s go over the main materials you’ll see so you can clean them effectively.
You don’t want to use anything too abrasive here. Glass pans are meant to withstand heat because of the way they’re designed and the glass that is used, but if you were to make microfractures all along that glass with harsh steel, you alter the way that the glass expands and contracts in accordance with the temperature. This could eventually lead to breakage. Use soft sponges, soft plastic bristle brushes, and the rough side of most dollar store sponges, just so long as it doesn’t come with steel wiring built into it.
Ceramic should be treated the same as glass. You want to avoid overly abrasive scrubbing agents as well as cleaners. Hot water and soap are going to do the trick, but with ceramic, the longer you leave food in the pan, the harder it’s going to be to get out. Using the rough side of your sponge is okay, but you should try to use a plastic bristle brush and the soft side of your sponge beforehand.
You can bang these up and use steel wool on them if you want. These—along with stainless steel—are the most durable types of lasagna pans out there. They won’t break or shatter, but having too many divots in them from harsh cleaning can bring forth a lot of other issues. Bacterial growth can run rampant, so even though you don’t have to worry about anything, you should still try your best to be careful with your aluminum pans.

These are less durable than glass. While the metal inside is good, the coating is fragile, flecks off into your food, and can leach into your food—none of the other options we’ve mentioned do that. You can only use the soft side of your sponge and a soft plastic bristle brush on these, otherwise, you run the risk of major damage. Nonstick metal pans usually use Teflon or a material like it, but if you find nonstick ceramic pans that have a natural coating (some type of glaze in the production process), you should be okay, just clean them carefully to avoid leaving divots in the finish.
Regardless of what type of pan you have, there’s one major rule to follow any time you hand wash a dish: air drying. Even if you clean your dishes well, pockets of water or condensation that stays on your dishes after cleaning them can, and oftentimes do lead to massive bacterial growth. It’s like leaving food on your pan and putting it away. Air dry for at least 30 minutes, and if you have difficult angles of your pan, reposition it after 30 minutes to let the rest dry out.
Are Glass Lasagna Pans Better Than Metal?
While many people fail to spot the differences, a glass lasagna pan could have tremendous benefits over a metal or ceramic lasagna pan. Each material is different, heats differently, and distributes heat differently.
The reason you usually see glass or ceramic dishes for lasagna is because they conduct heat in a similar fashion. Instead of rapidly heating up the exterior of your lasagna, these heat up evenly over time. It’s a slower process, but it’s designed to give even heat to all areas of your lasagna. If you’re using a particularly large dish, this will be a huge help to ensure consistency over the whole dish without those unnecessarily crispy edges.
