Are you a fan of dark, dense and strong coffee? If so, Nespresso’s Intenso blend is for you. As the name suggests, this blend is a powerful one, with an intensity level 9. It’s created from dark-roasted South American, Mexican and Guatemalan Arabica beans, as well as a little bit of Robusta coffee, which helps draw out the roasted cereal and cocoa notes from this intense blend. Despite such a strong and full-bodied flavor, these Nespresso capsules are far from bitter – instead, they’re simply rich and dark. They’re perfect for folks who like their coffee with a serious punch!

The pack comes with 30 capsules, which is a monthly coffee supply for one person, or about a two week supply for two people. Each capsule is made from recyclable aluminum, so you don’t have to feel guilty about your single-serve coffee pleasure at all.

Key Features:

Nespresso Odacio Capsules

Another excellent coffee variety pack for the VertuoLine machines. This assortment contains three different blends – Hazelino, Caramelizio and Vanizio – and 10 capsules of each. This is a light to medium roast coffee overall, but each blend has its unique flavor and strength. Hazelino, for example, is a blend of slightly roasted Central American and Brazilian Arabica coffee beans and is infused with a hazelnut flavor for a sweet, nutty aroma and a balanced and smooth texture. Caramelizio is also made from lightly roasted Arabica beans that come from Brazil and Central America, but it naturally has caramelized sugar notes, as well as a subtle scent of vanilla.

Granted, this is a very light sugar note so the coffee doesn’t taste like sweetened coffee – it’s much milder than that but still very caramel-like. Finally, Vanizio is created from a balanced blend of Brazilian and Central American Arabica beans, medium roasted and flavored with vanilla, having a very smooth and satisfying taste and aroma.

This assortment is perfect for folks who like a little variety in their coffee drinking rituals. It’s also great if you’re not a fan of super-powerful, dark roasted coffees, as each blend has a brightness to it and a very pleasant, sweet flavor. As usual, all 30 cups are made from recyclable aluminum, so the environmental footprint is minimal with these capsules.

Nespresso VertuoLine Coffee Stormio Capsules

Nespresso VertuoLine Coffee Stormio Capsules

Made from highly roasted Nicaraguan and Guatemalan Arabica coffee beans, Stormio capsules are perfect for folks who like their coffee intense and incredibly flavorful: spicy, woody and bold. Despite its strong punch, Stormio is not bitter – it’s vibrant and smooth, delicious both for coffee novices and connoisseurs. That said, this blend is made of dark and long roasted beans, so the intensity is guaranteed both in terms of flavor and body. This means it may not be for everyone, such as people who prefer lighter, sweeter and simpler flavors. But even if you end up not liking Stormio, which in our humble opinion is quite hard to do, you can soften its intensity by adding milk.

Because they’re made from recyclable aluminum, Nespresso coffee capsules don’t create much of a footprint on our environment, which is always a good thing. It’s worth mentioning that Odacio capsules are compatible with VertuoLine machines only.

Nespresso Caramelizio Capsules

For fans of naturally sweet and light coffee, Nespresso Caramelizio capsules are a perfect choice. This delicious coffee blend is created from lightly roasted Brazilian and Central American beans and it has subtle notes of caramelized sugar (hence the name!), as well as a pleasant and subtle scent of vanilla. The overall flavor and aroma of this blend is subtle yet distinct, definitely not overwhelming like a shot of caramel syrup in Starbucks coffee. The caramel flavor and light vanilla scent complement the blend beautifully, which makes coffee taste natural but sweet. With roast intensity level 6, Caramelizio is somewhere in the middle – not very powerful but certainly not watery and weak either. It’s just right to start one’s day or even end it.

The pack comes with 30 capsules and all are made from recyclable aluminum, so you don’t have to worry about placing stress on our already stressed out the environment – just bring them to one of Nespresso’s collection points or drop them off at your nearest Nespresso boutique.

Nestle Nespresso Diavolitto Capsules

Nestle Nespresso Diavolitto Capsules

If you love the taste and kick of strong, powerful and rich espresso, then Nespresso Diavolitto will be your favorite coffee blend ever. This intense coffee is made from Central and South America Robusta beans with Brazilian Arabica. The brew is, in one word, powerful. And yet, it has a surprisingly smooth and fine texture, which is not always the case with very strong espressos. Diavolitto has an interesting oak wood and leather aroma which is very subtle but gives the coffee that edge and kick that we can all appreciate in the mornings.

Because this is a highly roasted blend with an intensity level 11, it’s also quite bitter and rich, but not harsh. Nevertheless, if you find it a little too much for your taste, you can easily turn it into a nice cup of coffee by hitting the brew button a second time, or create a cappuccino or latte out of it by using milk.

The pack comes with 50 aluminum capsules which not only ensure coffee freshness but also 100% recyclability, which is good news for our environment.

Dark roast espresso, intensity 11

Nespresso VertuoLine Espresso Altissio

Nespresso VertuoLine Espresso Altissio

Another excellent-quality espresso by Nespresso, Altissio boasts a rich, full-bodied taste and smooth cereal notes. This blend is created from Costa Rican Arabica beans and South America Robusta beans, so the result is a powerful, true espresso. That said, this is a milder espresso than Diavolitto, which is the strongest coffee by Nespresso. With a roast intensity level nine, Altissio is definitely intense as well but with more subtle and soft notes. In other words, the coffee tastes strong but balanced. This is also due to the specific extraction process used here – a combo of short pre-wetting, a slow flow and a high extraction temperature.

This is a 50 capsule pack, so it should last quite a while. All capsules are made from aluminum so they keep the freshness of the coffee for a very long time, plus they’re fully recyclable.

Looking for a coffee specifically designed for mornings? Nespresso’s Giornio coffee may be exactly what you need. Made from two different Ethiopian Arabica beans – Sidamo and Mokaboji – and washed Kenyan Arabica beans, this interesting blend has a floral aromatic profile and a hint of acidity for that much needed morning coffee punch. There are toasted cereal tones too, which help make the coffee taste quite rich and full-bodied but never overwhelming. It’s no wonder why – this is a medium roast coffee with intensity level four, so it’s quite mild but not weak. Giornio is roasted in two splits, where its Ethiopian beans are roasted shorter but lighter for those interesting white and wild floral notes, and its Kenyan beans are roasted longer and darker for rich body.

There are 30 capsules in this pack which should be enough for about a month of coffee supply. As always, all capsules are made from 100% recyclable aluminum which doesn’t create much of an ecological footprint.

Best Nespresso Capsules Buying Guide & FAQ

The Nespresso world is large and diverse. There are OriginalLine and VertuoLine capsules to choose from, and even within the VertuoLine only, the choices are many. Do you prefer light or dark roasted coffee? Perhaps medium roast is more of your thing? Are you a fan of subtle sweet flavors or powerful and intense-tasting coffees? Are you looking for a relaxing afternoon cup of joe or a morning espresso with a serious punch to wake you up?

Searching for the right Nespresso capsules can be quite difficult as there is a staggering selection of coffee blends and flavors to choose from. In addition, there are also your preferences and budget to think about. To help you find the best Nespresso capsules, we created this buying guide. Here, we talk about all things Nespresso coffee, including different types of capsules you can buy and factors to consider during your selection process.

What is Nespresso?

Nespresso is a popular Switzerland-based operating unit of the Nestle Group. The company was founded in 1986, so it’s been in the coffee business for almost 35 years. They sell espresso and coffee machines as well as coffee capsules or pods for home and professional use. Their popularity mostly stems from the fact that they consistently produce top-quality products, machines and coffee pods included. Of course, single-serve coffee machines and their capsules are also incredibly easy and quick to use which only adds to the brand's popularity.

There are two main types of Nespresso machines, and therefore coffee capsules:

  • OriginalLine
  • VertuoLine

The VertuoLine is specifically produced for North American and Canadian markets. Unlike the OriginalLine which brews only espresso, the VertuoLine machines use "centrifusion" to brew both coffee and espresso, meaning they spin the capsule to more properly and thoroughly infuse it with water. Also, VertuoLine machines and capsules use barcodes, so the machine automatically knows exactly how to brew each capsule you use.

Before you purchase your coffee pods, remember to think about the compatibility of the capsules with the machines. VertuoLine coffee capsules, for instance, are not compatible with OriginalLine machines. So, when it comes to Nespresso compatible capsules and VertuoLine machines specifically, stick to VertuoLine pods and capsules only.

Types of Nespresso Capsules

As mentioned, there are two main Nespresso capsules: OriginalLine and VertuoLine pods. Because we’re focusing on the Nespresso Vertuo capsules in this article, we’ll stick to coffee styles from this line only.

Here are 5 types of Vertuo capsules:

  1. Espresso: traditional, intense and small (1.35 oz), this type is ideal if you love strong and powerful coffee. Intensity levels range from 4 – 11.
  2. Double Espresso: this is basically twice your normal espresso (2.7 oz). Strong and rich, with intensity levels 6 – 8.
  3. Gran Lungo: perfect if you want to extend the pleasure of your double espresso (5 oz). Intensity levels range from 4 – 8.
  4. Coffee: most people’s favorite style of java, coffee allows for a longer drinking experience (7.77oz). There are various capsules to choose from, as well as intensities 2 -9.
  5. Alto XL: this is the largest cup size capsule (14 oz), with two options and two intensities to choose from, 4 – 7.

So, which type of Nespresso capsule is for you? A coffee's flavor and body is entirely personal preference and what is incredibly enjoyable for one person may be bitter and overwhelming for another. Having said that, here are our recommendations when it comes to Vertuo capsules.

For Espresso Lovers

If you love bold, rich and roasty espresso flavors, these two are the ideal choices:

  • Diavolitto: intense and powerful, intensity 11
  • Altissio: full-bodied and rich, intensity 9

For Coffee Lovers

If you like a longer coffee drinking experience, these balanced flavored options are our favorite:

  • Intenso: deep, dense and rich, intensity 9
  • Stormio: strong, rich and woody flavored, intensity 8
  • Odacio: bold, bright and balanced, intensity 7
  • Melozio: smooth, sweet and balanced, intensity 6
  • Hazelino: for hazelnut flavor lovers, intensity 6
  • Caramelizio: for sweet caramel flavor lovers, intensity 6
  • Giorino: floral, lively and velvety, intensity 4

Factors to Consider When Choosing Coffee Capsules

If the sea of different Nespresso capsules has left you confused and unsure which type and style to purchase, don’t worry – we can simplify the selection process for you. Here are the two most important factors to consider before making a purchasing commitment.

  • Roast

First things first, do you prefer light, medium or a dark roast? This is one of the most important factors to consider during your selection process as the roasting process determines how bright or bitter the final product is. Light roast coffee sees less heat than dark roast coffee, so it’s brighter, fruity and almost herbal-like. The body of such coffee is thinner than dark roast coffee, and the coffee itself is higher in caffeine. Dark roast coffee, on the other hand, sees much more heat and therefore tastes more roasty, sometimes like roasted nuts. This type has a thicker body and more robust flavor but less caffeine.

So basically, the main difference between light and dark roast coffee is in flavor and body: lighter roast has more delicate flavors and is thinner, while darker has a more robust, single-note flavor and is thicker. Medium roast coffee lies somewhere in between these two.

  • Coffee Type

Do you prefer small but strong and intense coffee, or a larger one for a longer, more comfortable drinking experience? If you’re a fan of the former java, espresso pods are ideal: incredibly intense, bold and powerful, espresso capsules are perfect for quick wake-me-up morning moments. If you love to drink your cup of joe slowly and leisurely, regular coffee pods are what you need.

Of course, Nespresso VertuoLine offers a lot more capsules, so besides espresso and coffee, you can also opt for a double espresso, Gran Lungo or Alto XL. There are even newer types crafted especially for milk.

Best Nespresso Capsules FAQ

Q: Is Nespresso real coffee?

A: Nespresso capsules contain finely ground coffee beans, so yes, the machine will produce real coffee. The rumors about non-real or instant Nespresso coffee stem from a misunderstanding about the contents of the pods. Apparently, some folks believe that Nespresso capsules contain instant soluble coffee and not actual ground beans, which, of course, isn’t true.

Q: What does the intensity mean in Nespresso?

A: Nespresso’s intensity levels of a coffee are determined first and foremost by the degree of roasting, meaning its duration and temperature, and then also by its bitterness and body. In other words, it’s a combination of three factors: roasting, body and bitterness.

What the intensity of a coffee doesn’t relate to is its caffeine content. This means that a higher intensity level doesn’t equal more caffeine content just like a lower intensity level doesn’t mean a lower caffeine content.

Q: Can you run a Nespresso pod twice?

A: Of course! If you purchase a strong, bold espresso pod and you find it too overpowering, bitter and intense for your taste, simply hit the brew button twice to create a nice cup of coffee.

Q: Can you make regular coffee with Nespresso?

A: Yes, Nespresso has a huge variety of products to choose from, including coffee capsules, espresso, double espresso, Gran Lungo and Alto XL pods. If you like a traditional cup of coffee, definitely choose some of the coffee capsules Nespresso has. Our personal favorites are Odacio, Stormio, Intenso and Melozio, but there are many more styles to choose from, including decaffeinated pods.

Our Top Pick

With so many Nespresso VertuoLine capsules to choose from, picking out the winner was difficult. Because each style has its own unique taste, flavor, body and aroma, we couldn’t pick only one. Instead, we chose Nespresso VertuoLine Coffee, Assorted Pack 30 Capsules containing 10 Stormio, 10 Odacio and 10 Melozio coffee blends. In our opinion, these are the best Nespresso capsules you can get as the assortment caters to practically everyone’s tastes. Stormio is intense, rich coffee with a deep woody flavor, perfect for people who like a cup of joe with a kick in the mornings. Odacio is probably one of the most popular coffee blends as it’s bold, full-bodied yet lively with a fruity flavor. In other words, it seems to offer the best of both worlds. Melozio is a perfect afternoon pick me up, because it’s lightly roasted, smooth, balanced with sweet and biscuity notes. Overall, a fantastic coffee assortment that is a best-seller for a reason (or rather, for several reasons!).
