If you are looking to add mozzarella sticks on your party menu, here are a few tips on how to make mozzarella sticks.
What are Mozzarella Sticks?
Mozzarella sticks are a well-liked deep-fried cocktail snack that consists of long pieces of mozzarella cheese that come coated with seasoned breadcrumbs. The sticks are usually fried until they turn golden brown on the outside and melty on the inside. Generally, Mozzarella sticks are served with some marinara sauce, just dip in and enjoy.
How to Prepare Mozzarella Sticks
To effectively prepare homemade Mozzarella sticks, you will need one special equipment, and that is the deep-fry thermometer. Now let’s take a good look at the recipe.
- Mozzarella – one pound.
- All-purpose flour – ¾ cup.
- Eggs – three large ones.
- Dried parsley – one tsp.
- Whole milk – three tbsp.
- Panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) – two cups.
- Garlic powder – one and a half tsp.
- Onion powder – one and a half tsp.
- Dried basil – one tsp.
- Dried oregano – one tsp.
- Dried thyme – one tsp.
- Vegetable oil – about six cups (for frying).
- Kosher Salt.
- Spicy Marinara sauce – this is used when you are ready to serve.
- Step one
The Mozzarella should be cut into 3x½” pieces, whilst the all-purpose flour goes into a shallow bowl, and another bowl should be used for beating milk and egg. A third bowl is needed where you will proceed to mix garlic powder, panko, basil, onion powder, parsley, oregano, and of course thyme.
- Step two
Work with one stick of mozzarella at a go. First, dredge it in flour and shake off any surplus, take it for an egg wash by dipping the piece in the already prepared egg mixture, then use the panko mixture to coat, applying enough pressure to stick it on. Make a second coating by repeating the steps, then place in a wire rack positioned within a rimmed baking sheet. Do the same with the other pieces of mozzarella. Place the rack with the coated mozzarella in the freezer and allow it at least one hour to freeze.
- Step three
A pot equipped with a deep-fry thermometer should be used for the frying with vegetable oil reaching up to 22″ upside. Heat the oil-filled pot over med to high heat until you get up to 350° registered on the thermometer. Start frying the pieces of mozzarella in batches, and make sure to monitor and turn them until you realize a golden brown color and your crispy mozzarella sticks are good and ready. How long to deep fry mozzarella sticks depends on the type of heat, whether medium or low, but it can go from 2–2½ minutes. You can then transfer your homemade mozzarella sticks onto a waiting plate lined with a paper towel and proceed to season them with salt while still sizzling hot. Serving is best done with Spicy Marinara Sauce.
It is quite ok to bread your Mozzarella sticks three days ahead and preserve them in the freezer.
Baked Mozzarella Sticks
Some people are of the belief that baked mozzarella sticks are not very tasty and prefer to fry them in oil for a very appetizing flavor. However, it is possible to make very tasty mozzarella sticks without having to fry them. This is especially great for those whose health conditions do not allow them to consume fried food. However, the risk of error is higher in baking than in frying, since it is not easy to monitor the cooking process in the oven as you would with frying. If a serious error does occur, it just might result in dissolved whitish blobs instead of the delicious malleable cheese sticks we all love!
If your preference runs to baked mozzarella sticks, follow the same preparation process as the fried version – but at the end, just place the sticks in an oven heated to 450-degree and bake until you achieve the golden brown color. However, you must be sure to freeze the cheese before breading as this will buy time and ensure that the sticks stay intact while baking in the hot oven.
