Not only can you control the ingredients that you add to your soda, but it also saves on plastic use too, therefore benefiting the environment. Lots of soda makers require the addition of syrups and flavors to make your sweet fizzy drinks, but did you know that you can also use them to make carbonated water too?
Some of the most highly rated soda makers include:
- KitchenAid Sparkling Beverage Maker
- iSi Stainless Steel Soda Siphon Bottle
- Aarke Premium Carbonator
Soda makers are handy because they will save you from going to the grocery store and carrying heavy bottles of water and soda. They’re much better for the environment and really good fun to use too. You can either use them to make sparkling water with added flavored syrups or a healthy alternative (with much less sugar) would be to use them to make carbonated water to add fruit mixes to. Soda machines are simple to use and require the use of a carbonator. This is usually a small canister that you unscrew and place into the machine – you will need to refer to the instructions included with your machine for this as every model is different! You then add water and flavored syrup, press the button (or squeeze a trigger, depending on the model that you use) and watch the fizzy magic happen before your very own eyes! Easy.
If you do not own a soda maker then don’t worry as there are other ways for you to make your own soda. You can use seltzer water or sparkling mineral water and add soda ingredients to tailor the drink to your taste. The benefit of making your own fizzy drink is that you can limit the amount of syrup and sugar that you add too. Popular ingredients include the use of fresh lemon or lime juice, honey, vanilla extract, ginger and fruit purees.
How to Make Soda
Homemade soda usually works on a 1:2 ratio with one part fruit mix and two parts water. You can sweeten your soda with a honey syrup mix (instead of sugar), which can be made by adding honey and water to a pan, allowing the honey to dissolve and then setting aside for later use. To get the fruit ready for adding to your soda water, you just simply need to run through a juicer and then push through a fine sieve to remove any pulp. you can then sweeten the drink with the honey syrup you have made – which again, is a great alternative to sugar! This is where you can get super creative with your fruit mixes and try experimenting with lots of different flavor combinations.
