How to Roast Your Own Coffee Beans

When it comes to roasting coffee beans, the first thing that you will need to do is to get your coffee beans (unsurprisingly). Sourcing whole coffee beans isn’t all that difficult and you can get high quality coffee beans online, now. Alternatively, you can normally find high quality coffee beans from other sources as well; there are actually a number of different shops that even specialize in providing high quality, fresh coffee beans specifically for the purpose of brewing top quality coffee!
Once you have sourced your coffee beans for roasting, you then need to ensure that you have the right equipment to do so. Though there are specialist coffees roasting machines that you can use, the easiest way to roast coffee at home is to simply do so in a pan or an oven. If you have a popcorn popper machine that can also work to help you roast your coffee beans. We will be primarily focusing on the first two in this post, as these will be the easiest way for most to roast your own coffee beans at home.
First Method Of Roasting Coffee Beans in a Pan
The first method that we like to use is to roast coffee beans in a pan. When roasting coffee beans, though, it is important to remember to open up a window or an extractor fan as there will probably be a large amount of smoke!
First, measure out the amount of coffee beans that you wish to roast; these coffee beans should then be spread evenly over the base of your frying pan, which should ideally be a large one in order to hold as much coffee as possible. Spread these no thicker than ¼ the depth of the pan, in order to make it easy to move the beans around.
It is vital that this pan is thoroughly cleaned prior to use (ideally it should be a brand new one, or one that is only used for roasting coffee, but a well cleaned pan will also suffice). If not, the pan could add odd flavours and aromas to your home roasted coffee.
Starting with a low heat, place the pan over the heat and begin to stir the coffee beans. The entire process of roasting coffee beans in a pan normally takes about 15 to 20 minutes and it is important that you do not stop stirring the beans in this time; they aren’t being fried, after all! The heat should be slowly turned up throughout this process in order to gradually increase the roasting of the beans.
After a little while, when the beans are adequately roasted, a little oil will likely appear on their surface; once you see this, the beans should be removed from the heat and allowed to cool.
Second Method Of Roasting Coffee Beans in a Pan
An alternative to the pan method, that is less tedious as well, is to roast your coffee beans in an oven. Roasting coffee in an oven is incredibly simple and easy; although there is a greater chance of mistakes being made as you cannot see the beans throughout the roasting process.
First, preheat your oven to approximately 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Spread the grains evenly on a sheet of baking paper and place them in the preheated oven.
Again, this process will likely take approximately 20 minutes. However, unlike with the pan roasting method, the temperature should be gradually dropped during this time for oven roasting your coffee beans.
Once the beans have finished roasting, remove them from the oven and waste no time in ensuring that you remove the husks rapidly; the easiest way to do this at home is to put the beans in a colander and shake. Once this is done, they should then be cooled very rapidly with the use of a fan or hairdryer, in order to prevent them from getting excessively burned.
Roasting coffee beans in an oven is a great way for a person to roast their own coffee beans at home, without having to spend 20 minutes tediously stirring the beans. However, this is arguably the less effective of the two methods, due to the fact that the beans’ progress cannot be monitored and the beans themselves cannot be interfered with, as they are during the stirring process.
Using Coffee Roasters and Popcorn Poppers
Coffee roasters and popcorn poppers are great machines to use for your coffee bean roasting, if you intend to make the investment in new kit. If you choose to do so, make sure to check the instructions for your specific machine in order to ensure that you get the best possible roasted coffee that you can.
