Italian Pizza vs American Pizza: Take Your Pick
Originating from Italy, pizza is one of those dishes that few can resist. This savory dish gained most of its popularity after Americans introduced their take on pizza. However, Italians true to their nature, serve what is authentic pizza that is as delicious as American pizza but really very different. And while the war between Italian and American pizza still rages on, we will take a closer look at the two and decide which is best!
If we were to point out the biggest difference between the two pizza types, it would definitely be the crust. Italian pizzas are known for their thin, cracker-like crusts. Made with fresh wheat-based dough, it is no doubt that the lightweight Italian crusts are a real treat. However, that is not to say Italian pizzerias do not offer variations to their crusts – they mostly stick to their traditional ways.
The US pizza, on the other hand, is a whole different matter. Aside from thin crusts, Americans offer deep crusts, thick crusts, stuffed crusts and much more. The pizza chains are also always bringing in new styles of crust that makes them unique on their own. And even though such a huge variety is available, most of the time, the crust is characteristically much thicker and heavier compared to traditional pizza made by the Italians.
Like the crust, the sauces used by the two nations are much different than you can imagine. Italians, owing to their lifestyle and incredible countryside, offer a kind of sauce that has no match. Fresh and simple ingredients like olive oil, oregano, pureed tomatoes and garlic are used to make the sauce that makes Italian pizzas so individual. The herby sauce suffuses into the thin crust and the two paired together do not fail to raise anyone’s appetite.
In contrast, the sauce used on US pizza is unlike that used on the authentic pizza. Firstly, the Americans are hardly able to deliver a sauce made from garden-fresh ingredients since they cater to huge crowds. Also, when we refer to sauce, we actually mean tons of varieties of sauces. Most are slow-cooked and tangy unlike the herby sauce used by Italian pizzerias. And like the crust, the pizza chains in the US keep a huge range of sauces on their menus. And their tastes are simply marvelous too though probably not as fresh.
Traditional pizza made by the Italians is never seen to be topped with a variety of meats. Instead, you find only an individual type of meat like ham or prosciutto on the pizza. The reason behind this is simple – the Italians simply prefer to savor only a kind of meat in the dish. Having more than one kind of meat on pizza is a kind of deviation they would rather not make.
American pizzas, however, are very popular because of the variety of meat you can get on each pizza. Meat lover’s pizza is undoubtedly a favorite of many. There is nothing the pizza chains in America do not offer. Starting from chicken, beef, and bacon to pepperoni – there is always something for everyone! Sometimes it is difficult to understand whether they are catering to millions or individuals! And all in all, these pizzas are hard to pass up on!
While the types of toppings are mostly similar, quantity plays a huge role as well. Italian pizzas are never as loaded with cheese or meat as much as American pizzas are. And the variety, in this case, is limited too. Nonetheless, the Italian pizzerias pull off their dishes with great success. The fresh flavors and ingredients are light and easy to digest which is great for the body. This also allows you to eat a whole pie without feeling as though your stomach will burst at any moment.
Packed with cheese and other toppings, the American pizzas are harder to down than authentic pizzas. But that most definitely does not mean that pizzas from this end of the earth are not delicious or worth it. They most definitely are and the variety again is mesmerizing! Cajun, Margherita, Hawaiian are only a few to name.
After delving into the basics of the two types of pizzas, we can conclude that the war is still on. There is no way only one of them can be chosen best. The question is not about which is greatest but about what your taste buds prefer! And as long as pizza exists, only one fact remains true – there is nothing better than pizza!
